Golf Update: Featuring Sarah Specker
By Rachel Richter
Seton High School’s golf team is having a great year. One player, in particular, who continues to excel this year, is senior Sarah Specker. Specker started off her varsity season with a birdie on the first hole. This is a big deal, and it proves that Specker is off to a great start. In total, she has gotten four birdies so far in the season. Specker is a key senior player on the varsity golf team, and we can’t wait to watch her shine this season.
On Monday, September 9th the JV golf team played McAuley High School at Woodland. Although the team played well, they lost 189 to 199. Sophomore Meghan Koch played extremely well on Monday. Koch was the medalist for this game with a score of 44. Sophomore Mackenzie Depenbrock and freshman Isabella Olthaus weren’t too far behind with scores in the 50’s.
On Tuesday, September 10th the Varsity golf team played in the GGCL Tournament at Weatherwax. The GGCL Tournament consists of 18 holes, and the team competed with Catholic girl schools: Ursuline, St. Ursula, Mt. Notre Dame, Mercy, and McAuley. Seton was off to a great start on the front nine with Corrine Deutenberg leading the way with a 39, Ashley Hoinke right there with a 43, and Sarah Specker helping with a 45. Unfortunately, about halfway through the match, the heat began to set in. The team went from 175 on the front to 203 on the back. Varsity coach Peggy Korte comments on the tournament, “It is amazing what 95 degrees can do!”
The scores of the tournament were as followed: Corrine Duetenberg-86, Ashley Hoinke-89, Sarah Specker-102, Kourtney Keller-103, and Megan Selby-107. The medalist for the tournament was Carolyn Markley from St. Ursula with a 77. Seton’s golf team missed third place by 7 strokes. The final was Ursuline, ST. Ursula, Mt. Notre Dame, Mercy, Seton and McAuley.
On Thursday, September 12th the Varsity golf team played against Kings High School at Bellwood. The team played much better on Thursday at Bellwood than they did last year at Bellwood. Last year , Seton scored a 197 and won since Kings shot a 211. This year, Seton shot a 187 but lost as Kings shot a 182. Although the team lost, they played extremely well and are improving their game from last year! The Varsity coach, Peggy Korte comments, “A shout out to Sarah Specker who shot our lowest with a 44. It was a nice round of golf for her.”
The golf team is now getting back to work and setting their sights on Sectionals, coming up at the end of this month. Seton’s golf team is having a great year, and everyone is encouraged to come out and support them at their upcoming matches!
