Black Friday Shopping
By Kelly Gallagher
Many know Black Friday as one of the most chaotic times of the holiday season. Black Friday’s name started in Philadelphia, where it was originally used to describe the hectic and disorderly pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur the day after Thanksgiving. Later, retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss from January through November, and “Black Friday” indicated the point at which retailers began to profit, or “in the black.”
On Thursday, November 28, which is also Thanksgiving, many stores such as Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Sears, Macys, Kohls, J.C. Penny, and The Gap are opening earlier than usual. Many of the outlets are known to have good deals such as the Cincinnati Premium Outlets in Monroe, Ohio. These outlets have popular stores such as Coach, Converse, Guess, J.Crew, Michael Kors, Nike, Charlotte Rousse, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Under Amour. The Cincinnati Premium Outlets begin opening some of their stores as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving night.
According to a National Retail Federation, holiday shoppers are expected to spend about 3.9% more this year than they did last year, but the earlier opening hours may not have the anticipated outcome. Instead of increasing sales, they could just be pushing the spike in sales forward. Walmart begins their specials at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving which is earlier than in the past. Target plans on starting their sales at 8 p.m., an hour earlier than last year. Another popular store that many people line up to enter is Best Buy, which is open at 6 p.m. on Thursday until Friday at 10 p.m. Macy’s stores will be opening on Thanksgiving for the first time in the company’s history and they will stay open through Black Friday evening. Kohl’s is opening an hour earlier as well at 8 p.m. and will close again at midnight on Black Friday.
Junior Hannah Fricke has a tradition every Black Friday. She explains her tradition saying, “All the girls on my mom’s side usually go to Columbus and shop at their outlet mall. My favorite stores that we go to are Nike and Forever 21, and we always get good deals! I get all my running shorts like half off and it’s a really fun time.”
Many people look forward to Black Friday shopping as a holiday tradition with family and friends. After a festive day of parades and eating delicious food, it is always nice to get the best bargains and even Christmas gifts for loved ones.
