Saints Prepare for Opening Day

This past weekend the Seton softball team participated in three preseason games to prepare for Monday, March 31 opening day at Delhi Park. The varsity team matched up against Harrison on Friday at Delhi. The team then competed at the Coaches Association Fundraiser in a double header against Troy and Waynesville at Westcarollton.
Friday the matchup against the Harrison Wildcats proved to be difficult. The young team lost 4-5 with hits by senior Chelsea Zang, and juniors Abby Lamping and Hannah Wegman. Wegman said, “Although we did not win this game, it gave the sophomores and freshmen a better look at the way a varsity game runs.”
Saturday proved to be another disappointment when the Saints took on a double header against Troy and Waynesville. Throughout the first game, the team started off strong. Senior Chelsea Zang sent a ball to the outfield putting her at third base and scoring starting pitcher, junior Abby Lamping in for the first run of the game. The Saint´s celebration was cut short when Lamping did not get up from the slide into home base. Silence fell among the crowd to find Lamping down. She was carried off the field and sent to the hospital, only to find out that she had broken her tibia and fibula. The Saints fell to Troy 6-1.Lamping received surgery on Tuesday, March 25; her date of return has yet to be announced. Wegman said, “This is a tragic injury and will be hard to overcome, Abby was a main asset to our team.”
The Saints calmed down and looked for redemption during their second game against Waynesville. The team started off strong and held a solid 0-0 tie till the fourth inning. Doubles were placed by junior Hannah Wegman and bunts were laid by junior Lindsey Hubbard. Hubbard said, “The team was very shaken up about Abby, but as the game grew more intense we knew we had to protect our lead.” The varsity team fell to Waynesville 2-1
The team’s opening day is Monday, March 31 against St. Henry at 4:30 p.m.
