Most freshmen begin their first athletic season trying to learn and know their abilities, but not Erica Schloemer. She won three Varsity races, had the fastest time on Seton’s cross country team, and was always the first runner for Seton’s Varsity team when she ran. Erica defied the odds and rose above the freshman standard.

At GGCL’s (Girls Greater Cincinnati League), the Varsity race took a new turn when the suspected winner, St. Ursula runner Annie Heffernan, was hurt and could not run in the race. Grace Kelly from Ursuline Academy was ranked second thinking she will come in first, but Eric didn’t let that happen. She ran a smart and patient race looking like a veteran runner. She made her move in the last mile and finished the race as the 2014 GGCL Champion and 2014 GGCL Runner of the Year. Her time was an impressive 18:43!

At the start of the gun, Erica ran next to Lakota East’s Abbie VonFossen for most of the District race. She ran another clever and hard race. With Erica’s determination and ambition, she passed VonFossen in the final steps at the finish line becoming the District Champion with another outstanding time of 18:45. Both she and sophomore Audrey Laiveling qualified for Regionals.

At the Regional meet, Erica ran the first part of her race with the front pack from 4th place to 10th place. When the runners had a quarter of a mile to go, the third place runner from Lebanon started to fade back. Erica and a runner from Vandalia Butler surged ahead of the runner from Lebanon. Erica also pulled ahead of the runner from Vandalia Butler on the straight away to the finish. She came in third place with great time of 19:00.

The OHSAA State Cross Country Championships marked the end of Erica’s impressive and historic season. Erica started off in 18th place at the first mile mark and she kept moving up throughout the entire race. She was in 13th place when she started the straight away to the finish. With the little strength she had left, she outkicked the other runners to place 11th overall! Erica stated, “During the meet, other than being cold, it was such a privilege. Being able to run with the best of the best from the state of Ohio was awesome. It was cool being able to run through the stadium and having hundreds of people on both sides cheering for you.” She got her fastest time of the season, 18:34, and became the fastest freshman in the State of Ohio!

Erica had a spectacular season and she demonstrates how hard work and determination can pay off. I can’t wait to see her performance during her remaining years at Seton High School!
