Throughout today’s society, feminism is a word that is becoming more and more common. Singers ranging from Beyonce to Taylor Swift, as well as actresses such as Emma Watson, are taking a stand to make their opinion on feminism known. In my opinion, influential people voicing their opinion on the controversial subject of feminism are inspiring for many girls. High school age girls especially need to understand that standards for women are different than they used to be. In the past, women were expected to be inferior to men, and live to please them and keep them happy. However, today women are encouraged to stand up for themselves and understand that men and women are equal in all aspects of life. Many modern day celebrities are portraying their opinion causing feminism in today’s society to be very influential for women all over the world.

Beyonce Knowles, a famous singer, used lyrics in her song “Flawless” from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Ted Talk to emphasize feminism. Adichie, a Nigerian native and extreme feminist, expresses her opinion in her Ted Talk. Adichie shares her opinion when saying:

The problem with gender is that it prescribes how we should be rather than recognizing how we are. Now, imagine how much happier we would be, how much freer to be our true individual selves, if we didn’t have the weight of gender expectations. Boys and girls are undeniably different, biologically. But socialization exaggerates the differences, and then it becomes a self-fulfilling process (TED – We Should All Be Feminists).

I agree with Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie completely. I believe if gender expectations were not present everyone would be much happier. Men are often seen as being strong, unemotional, and envisioned as being the one to provide for the family by bringing in the money. Women, on the other hand, are viewed as the nurturing figure for the family, and the one to be responsible for daily house work and family obligations. However, today’s society looks down upon men that show emotion or are not the working member of the family. This causes unhappiness because it pressures people to feel or act a certain way. Gender expectation in today’s society adds to the general issue of feminism.

Emma Watson is another celebrity that makes her views on feminism known. She voiced her opinion by giving a speech entirely on feminism. She said, “We really want to end gender inequality. We want to try and galvanize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates of change” (Emma Watson Delivers Game-Changing Speech on Feminism). Watson’s approach is to team up with the males in our society to help people understand what needs to change in our society regarding feminism, but more specifically genderism. I think this is a good tactic to use when dealing with the issues we face and will continue facing until people change the world’s overall outlook on feminism.  Celebrities sharing their opinion on current issues have an impactful influence on the changes made in relation to the specific topic.

Taylor Swift makes her opinion on feminism publicly known in today’s society. She defends Emma Watson and says:

So many girls out there say ‘I’m not a feminist’ because they think it means something angry or disgruntled or complaining…I just think that a lot of girls don’t know the definition and the fact that Emma got up and explained it, I think it’s an incredible thing and I am happy to live in a world where that happened (Watch: Taylor Swift Defends Emma Watson and Stands Up for Feminism).

I think that Watson and Swift joining together to conquer the issue is awesome. Their opinions will be more influential towards those that need to be the advocates of change because of the fact that they are both role models for many teens.

Overall, feminism is an issue that is sparking more and more interest in today’s society. Role models such as Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and Emma Watson are taking a stand to make their opinion on feminism known. I think that such well known, influential people voicing their opinion on the controversial subject of feminism is inspiring for many girls, especially high school age girls to understand that standards for women are different than they used to be. In the past, women were expected to be inferior to men, and live to please them and keep them happy. However, today women are encouraged to stand up for themselves, and understand that men and women are equal in all aspects of life. Many modern day celebrities portraying their opinion and the importance of feminism in today’s society is very influential for women all over the world.
